Composite doors are known for being secure, stylish and highly energy-efficient. So, if you have started to feel a cold breeze coming through, it is natural to wonder whether that is normal or a sign that something is wrong.
The short answer is no. A composite door should not be draughty. When fitted correctly, these doors are designed to create a tight seal against the frame, keeping warm air inside and cold air out. If you are noticing draughts, it usually means there is a small issue with the seals, hinges or installation that can often be fixed quite easily.
Comp Door composite doors have a triple seal (triseal) for better weather proofing and performance, compared to many other composite doors that only have a double seal. All of our doors also come with an auto-fire lock, so that you don’t have to throw the handle to engage the locking mechanism into the frame – this means that when the door is shut it provides consistent compression on the gasket and massively reduces movement.
In normal circumstances, a composite door should be completely draught-proof. The materials and construction are specifically designed to prevent air leakage and provide excellent insulation. Compared to older timber or uPVC doors, a well-installed composite door offers much higher thermal efficiency.
If you can feel a draught, it usually means the door is not sitting flush against the frame or that one of the seals has worn down over time. These are minor issues rather than signs of a fault with the door itself, but they can make a noticeable difference to comfort and energy bills.
The rubber seals around the edge of the door create an airtight barrier. Over time, these seals can flatten, crack or come loose. When this happens, cold air can find its way through. Replacing the seals is usually a straightforward and affordable solution.
Composite doors are heavier than uPVC models. Over time, hinges can move slightly, causing the door to drop or sit unevenly in the frame. Small adjustments to the hinges will help equal out the gapping between the door and the frame, and will help with performance and operation of the door.
If the door frame was not installed squarely or the sealant around the edges has deteriorated, gaps may appear between the frame and the wall. A visual inspection around the outside of the door should reveal any cracks or gaps that need resealing.
If you have identified the source of the draught, there are several steps you can take to improve insulation:
It is worth carrying out a quick check of your seals and hinges once or twice a year, ideally before winter.
If you have replaced the seals and checked the alignment but the door is still draughty, it may be worth asking your installer to inspect it. There could be an underlying issue with the installation or the frame that requires professional adjustment.
If your door is still under warranty, the installer should be able to assess and correct any problems for you.
Cold air usually enters through small gaps caused by worn seals, loose hinges or poor installation around the frame.
Yes, most minor issues can be fixed at home. Replacing seals, tightening hinges and resealing the frame are simple maintenance tasks. You can also simply adjust the keeps on the frame to bring the door slab tighter to the gasket.
The door should close smoothly and evenly without needing extra force. There should be no visible gaps between the door and frame, and you should not be able to see daylight around the edges.
Yes. Composite doors combine materials such as timber, insulating foam and a durable GRP outer layer, which gives them excellent thermal performance compared to uPVC.
Door seals typically last between five and ten years depending on use and weather exposure.
A composite door should help your home stay warm, secure and energy-efficient. If you are experiencing draughts, it is usually a small problem that can be resolved quickly.
