Secured by Design Composite Doors

Secured by Design Composite Doors

Secured by Design (SBD) is a police-led initiative that focuses on preventing crime by making buildings and products more secure. It is a recognised, industry-wide accreditation that exceeds minimum building regulations, assuring homeowners that their composite doors are durable and well-protected against opportunistic crime.

To achieve SBD accreditation, a manufacturer must submit their products for independent testing at a laboratory recognised by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS). The SBD logo confirms that a product has been rigorously tested to withstand physical force and attempted break-ins.

Once these tests are successful, the manufacturer is granted a license to produce SBD-certified products, and must undergo regular audits to prove that every unit is made consistently and in a controlled environment.

How are SBD doors tested?

Secured by Design doors must undergo a series of physical trials that simulate the methods used by intruders. These tests examine the complete unit, ensuring the frames, hinges and locking mechanisms can resist attacks.

The testing process involves:

  • Hardware attacks using crowbars and mole grips
  • Door cylinder attacks using screwdrivers and craft knives
  • Impact tests using a 25kg steel ram and 50kg sandbag at hinge and locking points
  • Manual attacks using chisels and brick bolsters to attempt entry

Why choose SBD for your home?

Choosing SBD products provides you with peace of mind by significantly reducing the risk of your home being targeted by criminals. Research shows that homes with SBD products are 75% less likely to be burgled and 25% less likely to suffer criminal damage.

Beyond these security benefits, SBD-certified doors are a sensible financial investment. Because SBD products are built to high manufacturing standards, they often last longer and require less maintenance than other products. This can lower your home insurance premiums and increase the value and appeal of your property to potential buyers.

SBD vs. PAS24: What’s the difference?

While often mentioned together, Secured by Design and Product Assessment Specification (PAS24) are different accreditations.

PAS24 is a security standard for products set by the British Standards Institute (BSI). It provides a pass or fail appraisal of the hardware and construction of doors to ensure they can resist forced entry.

Secured by Design is a broader police-led initiative that covers the overall design of buildings and developments. SBD uses PAS24 as its minimum threshold for doors, meaning that every SBD door is PAS24 certified.

But that does not mean all PAS24-accredited products are Secured by Design. Because SBD sets the highest standard for security, accredited products must meet additional standards – including for mechanical durability and weatherability.
