Composite doors are known for being secure, stylish and highly energy-efficient. So, if you have started to feel a cold breeze coming through, it is natural to wonder whether that is normal or a sign that something is wrong.

The short answer is no. A composite door should not be draughty. When fitted correctly, these doors are designed to create a tight seal against the frame, keeping warm air inside and cold air out. If you are noticing draughts, it usually means there is a small issue with the seals, hinges or installation that can often be fixed quite easily.

Common causes of draughts around composite doors

Door or hinge misalignment

Composite doors are heavier than uPVC models. Over time, hinges can move slightly, causing the door to drop or sit unevenly in the frame. Small adjustments to the hinges will help equal out the gapping between the door and the frame, and will help with performance and operation of the door.

Poor installation

If the door frame was not installed squarely or the sealant around the edges has deteriorated, gaps may appear between the frame and the wall. A visual inspection around the outside of the door should reveal any cracks or gaps that need resealing.
